A 30-year-old man from Charlieville is expected to appear in court, after police say a kidnapping report was fabricated, leading to a major deployment of law enforcement resources.
Police say the report was made in May 2025, after a man in the United States received a WhatsApp call claiming his brother had been kidnapped and a ransom of $60,000, along with drugs and firearms, was being demanded.
An investigation by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit later revealed that the alleged victim was not kidnapped, but had been staying at a friend’s home.
Officers subsequently arrested Daoud Mohammed of Assaraf Road, Charlieville, for wasteful employment of police resources.
