CARICOM has approved a proposal to have the CCJ issue an advisory opinion on issues raised regarding the recent re-appointment of Secretary-General Carla Barnett.
This proposal came from Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar who has steadfastly maintained objections to the process used for the reappointment.
In a statement, she said the proposal for referral to the CCJ is in accordance with Article 212 of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas.
Mrs Persad-Bissessar welcomed the decision, saying it is consistent with CARICOM’s commitment to the highest standards of good governance and institutional improvement.
Also issuing a statement was CARICOM, which said this was the very purpose for which the CCJ was created – to be a treaty interpretation body.
It also agreed that this way forward allows for the matter to be resolved in an “amicable manner”.
