Agriculture Minister Ravi Ratiram says he is committed to strengthening plant protection, as he joins in observing International Day of Plant Health 2026.
This year’s theme is “Plant Biosecurity for Food Security.”
Mr Ratiram says plant health plays a critical role in safeguarding food security, protecting rural livelihoods, preserving biodiversity, and supporting sustainable economic growth.
He says healthy plants are also the foundation of resilient agricultural systems and national food security, and pointed to the increasing threats posed by invasive pests, plant diseases, and changing climatic conditions.
According to the Minister, farmers, agricultural stakeholders, institutions, and citizens all have a role to play in preventing, detecting, and managing plant threats.
As Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, he also reaffirmed the Ministryโs commitment to strengthening plant protection and biosecurity measures, advancing sustainable agricultural development, and promoting greater national awareness on the importance of plant health.
