Venezuelaโ€™s acting President Delcy Rodrรญguez has rejected comments by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting Venezuela could become the 51st American state.

Speaking at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Rodrรญguez said Venezuela would continue defending its sovereignty and independence, insisting the country was โ€œnot a colony, but a free country.โ€

She made the remarks during hearings over the disputed oil-rich Essequibo region claimed by both Venezuela and Guyana.

Trump reportedly told Fox News he was โ€œseriously consideringโ€ the proposal.
