UWI mourns death of renowned chemist Professor Baldwin Mootoo

The University of the West Indies community is mourning the death of distinguished chemist and former Deputy Principal Professor Baldwin Stephen Mootoo.

He died at his Lopinot home on Tuesday surrounded by family. He was 89 years old.

Professor Mootoo dedicated more than 30 years of service to UWI, holding several senior academic and administrative positions, including Head of the Chemistry Department, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Deputy Principal of the St Augustine Campus and Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research.

UWI described him as a teacher, researcher and leader who served the institution with love, commitment and distinction.

Professor Mootoo was also recognised internationally for his pioneering research in Natural Products Chemistry and for mentoring generations of Caribbean scientists and researchers.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 19th at the Aramalaya Presbyterian Church, followed by a private burial.
