The National Trade Union Centre and the Joint Trade Union Movement have condemned what they describe as an excessive police presence and use of force during Labour Day celebrations in Fyzabad.

In a statement, the labour bodies said Labour Day is a sacred occasion for workers and should remain a space for the peaceful expression of views and concerns.

NATUC and JTUM also raised concerns about the detention of social activist Alyssa Phillip and her mother, Camille Caresquero, alleging that officers used unnecessary force during the arrests.

The organisations say the actions of police overshadowed the significance of the event and undermined public confidence in law enforcement.

The trade union groups are calling for greater respect for citizens’ rights and say any concerns by police could have been handled differently while preserving the spirit of Labour Day.
