The Prison Officers’ Association has confirmed that Acting Prisons Commissioner Carlos Corrapse is currently on vacation leave, denying reports that he has been suspended.
In a Facebook post, the Association sought to clarify reports by Guardian Media, suggesting that Mr. Corrapse was removed from duty.
It said officers who accumulate more than 90 days of vacation leave may be directed by the relevant Service Commission to take leave, under public service arrangements.
The Association is urging the public to rely on verified information and avoid speculation while the matter is addressed through the proper channels.
Earlier this week, Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander confirmed that the Prison Commissioner was sent on immediate leave.
This followed allegations that a high profile businessman received preferential treatment while in detention at the Golden Grove Prison in Arouca.
