Opposition Leader Penelope Beckles is criticizing government’s proposed TT$1,000 peak-period airfare on the domestic air-bridge, calling it oppressive and harmful to ordinary citizens.
She says the jump from $400 to $1,000 during peak travel times will hurt workers, students, families, and frequent travellers who depend on affordable inter-island transport.
Mrs. Beckles warns the increase could also damage Tobago’s tourism sector, affecting small businesses, guesthouses, taxi operators, and vendors.
She is urging government to improve Caribbean Airlines’ efficiency instead of placing the burden on the public.
Earlier today, Government MP Dr Roodal Minister dismissed the media reports of a price hike as misleading.
Media reports quoted Trade Minister Kama Maharaj as saying the price of flights from Trinidad to Tobago would jump from the subsidized price of $400 to as high as $1000.
