The captain of the MV Barima and two other crew members have been charged with murder, in connection with the vessel’s fatal sinking.

The charges follow legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Guyana Newsroom reported that the three men appeared in court this morning and were remanded to prison, as the case was adjourned to August 3rd.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips previously said two crew members, including the captain, tested positive for narcotics.

The MV Barima sank on July 18th, leaving 73 people dead, 76 rescued and 30 still missing.
