Two of three completed joint army-police posts in Trinidad have been launched, but not officially opened.
The posts at Tarouba and Grand Bazaar were launched this morning, by Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander, the Police Commissioner and other senior law enforcement officials.
Minister Alexander told 103.1 FM News the units are being put into operation first, to assess how they work, before an official opening ceremony.
Minister Alexander said the unit at the Eddie Hart Savannah is scheduled to be opened this afternoon.
He also confirmed that other strategic locations are being identified for the remaining units, with the aim of improving service to the public and giving law enforcement an advantage.
Last week, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said three police post in Tobago have already been completed and are expected to be opened soon.
Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro says the launch of the micro-policing units marks the next stage in the TTPS’s anti-crime strategy.
This follows the end of the State of Emergency today.
Speaking to the media at today’s launch, Commissioner Guevarro issued a warning to those being released from Preventive Detention Orders.
Commissioner Guevarro noted that the law-enforcement strategy is coming together seamlessly, with a focus on proactive rather than reactive policing, taking the fight directly to criminals.
