Prison officers have intercepted a sock containing cigarettes, that was dropped off by a drone at the Maximum Security Prison this morning.
Around 5:47am, officers attached to the Emergency Response Unit conducted a security sweep of the court yards after a drone flight was detected.
They subsequently recovered the black sock containing 16 packs of Lucky Strike cigarettes.
The Prison Service says this incident highlights the evolving methods being used to sneak prohibited items into correctional facilities and the increasing role of technology in such attempts.
It reminds that the use of drones and other technologies to circumvent established security measures will be investigated by external law enforcement agencies.
