A 22-year-old British national has been held while attempting to smuggle nearly $6 million in marijuana into T&T.

During routine passenger clearance operations at the Piarco Airport yesterday, Customs Officers referred the individual to the Red Line for further examination of their luggage.

During this time, they found a quantity of plant-like material concealed in their baggage.

Field testing confirmed the substance to be marijuana, with the seizure valued around TT$5,996,295.80.

A statement from the Customs and Excise Division says the matter is being pursued under the Customs Act, Chapter 78:01, with charges expected for the importation of prohibited goods.

It adds, “This interception highlights the continued vigilance and proactive enforcement efforts of the Customs and Excise Division in safeguarding the borders of Trinidad and Tobago. Through intelligence-led operations and strategic enforcement initiatives, officers remain committed to detecting and preventing the importation of illegal narcotics.”
