The Law Association is urging the public to keep discussions about the ongoing Hadeed case respectful and to avoid personal attacks on Appeal Court judges.
The statement comes after last week’s ruling that businessman Dominic and Genevieve Hadeed must stay in detention while the State takes its appeal to the Privy Council.
That decision reversed an earlier High Court ruling that would have allowed the couple to remain under house arrest.
The Association says while criticism of court decisions is a fundamental democratic right, personal attacks and unfounded allegations against judges could weaken public confidence in the Judiciary.
It also stressed that the Appeal Court’s decision was made on an interim application and does not determine the main legal and constitutional issues, which are still before the courts.
The Association also noted that the Court of Appeal has not yet released its written reasons for the ruling.
It says those reasons will explain the legal basis for the decision and help lawyers, litigants and the public better understand how the court reached its decision.
