Energy Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal is describing last week’s oil spill as “minor”, saying there was no secrecy surrounding the incident.

According to a report in the Trinidad Express, Dr Moonilal said the Government remains committed to collaborating with the Venezuela to address any incidents affecting the area.

He added that work will continue to rehabilitate long-standing energy sector infrastructure challenges.

In a statement, Heritage Petroleum said the spill, estimated at ten barrels of oil, was quickly contained after being detected on May 1st and fully repaired and returned to service by May 2nd, 2026.

Venezuela, however, has claimed that the spill caused environmental damage along parts of its coastline and has since initiated plans to mitigate and contain the spill.

Foreign Affairs Minister Sean Sobers says communication with Venezuelan officials remains ongoing.
