Education Minister Dr Michael Dowlath says there must be equity in education.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the Caribbean Deaf Education Conference Dr Dowlath said captions, visual learning resources, accessible interfaces and technologies that respond to different communication needs must become a part of modern education rather than an afterthought.

He added that they should not be limited to helping deaf and hard of hearing learners adapt to systems that were designed without them.

The three-day event is being held at The UWI St. Augustine Campus under the theme “Pathways to Inclusive Education and Human Rights for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Empowering Change in the Caribbean and Beyond”.

In a statement the Ministry says, “By participating in this event, the Ministry of Education reaffirms its commitment to encouraging approaches that will improve equity for students that are deaf and hard of hearing and building an education system that challenges barriers to inclusive education and empowers every child to achieve their fullest potential.”
