Chad is set to deploy 1,500 troops to Haiti as part of a United Nations-backed security mission aimed at tackling escalating gang violence.
President Mahamat Déby Itno confirmed the move in a letter to lawmakers, stating that two battalions of 750 troops will be deployed starting this month for a one-year period.
He noted that 400 personnel have already been sent, describing the mission as one that honours Chad’s security forces.
The deployment comes after the United Nations Security Council approved an expanded multinational force of up to 5,500 troops, with enhanced powers to arrest suspected gang members.
