T&TEC has confirmed the existence of a “special protected list”, which exempts certain customers from disconnection despite outstanding electricity bills.

The matter was revealed on Monday, when Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar spoke in the Parliament.

In a statement today, T&TEC said the list was originally intended to protect ministries, state agencies and foreign embassies, but was expanded between 2015 and 2025.

This, it said, was to include certain ministers, MPs and private-sector companies.

The Commission added that there is no published policy governing the list, nor any records explaining how some individuals and private companies were added.

T&TEC says it has sought legal advice and will be guided by that advice in determining its next steps.
