A church break-in in St James is under investigation, after sacred items were stolen from the St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Mucurapo early this morning.
According to Catholic News, parish priest Father Emmanuel Pierre confronted intruders inside the church shortly after 5AM, moments before they escaped with two monstrances, valued at about $15,000.
He said even though the sacristy was found ransacked, the tabernacle was not damaged, however he added that the items will need to be replaced ahead of Corpus Christi on Thursday.
The Archdiocese of Port of Spain has described the incident as painful, and has called for increased vigilance around places of worship.
