Barbados is reporting historic growth in its tourism sector, after recording its highest-ever visitor arrivals last year.
The tourism minister says the island welcomed more than 727,000 long-stay visitors and nearly 818,000 cruise passengers.
He said tourism now contributes about 45 percent to Barbados’ GDP, calling it the backbone of the country’s economy.
Cruise arrivals for the upcoming winter season are projected to rise by 22 percent, adding that the strong numbers are also benefiting local businesses, entertainers and taxi operators.
