Acting Chief Magistrate Brian Debideen has categorically denied any wrongdoing, following reports of a search warrant being executed at his home in Gulf View.
During the search, several electronic devices were seized.
In a statement, attorneys Prakash Ramdhar, Michael Rooplal and Vishan Girwar, say their client cooperated fully and handed over all relevant devices as stipulated in the warrant.
“Our client recognizes the lawful authority of investigative agencies and respects the legal process. We also commend the Police Officers for the professionalism they displayed during the presentation of the warrant,” reads the statement.
They add that the execution of a search warrant does not, of itself, establish any wrongdoing, and urged against any inference of guilt.
Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro also confirmed the search, saying the operation was conducted under his direction and coordinated by DCP Natasha George.
He added that it was part of a broader investigation involving local and international law enforcement partners.
The Top Cop has since declined to give any further details, stating instead that updates will be given “when necessary and appropriate to do so”.
He added that everyone was entitled to the protections and due process afforded by the law and urged members of the public to refrain from speculation.
The incident has been noted by the Judiciary, which has also declined comment at this time “to safeguard the fairness and integrity of any ongoing investigative or legal processes.”
