About $1.68 billion worth of narcotics has been burned at the Caroni Cremation site.
Planned by the TTPS, this exercise was witnessed by Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro and Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander.
Among the substances destroyed were: cocaine, marijuana, heroin and ecstasy.
These are associated with matters handled by the Eastern, North Eastern, and Southern divisions, as well as the Special Investigations Unit.
The Top Cop said it also included some recent, major drug hauls.
Meanwhile, ACP Kerwin Francis said while confiscating narcotics was important, the TTPS is also intent on moving beyond that.
Also commenting on the exercise was Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who said the value of the narcotics destroyed today amounted to about 1% of T&T’s annual GDP.
She adds that the fight will continue against the “local drug mafia” with efforts to focus not only on physical shipments, but also “displacing their accomplices in our financial institutions, distribution networks, and public sector…”
