Work on the planned army-police post at the Eddie Hart Grounds in Tacarigua will resume this afternoon, following yesterday’s dispute over the start of construction.
Yesterday, workers left the site after officials at the Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation said they had not been informed about the project.
Following the incident, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar accused the Opposition of blocking the project, however Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles and TPRC Chairman Josiah Austin denied these claims.
Both instead raised issues about proper approvals and consultation.
Today, Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander told 103.1FM News that while he is working to resolve some administrative matters, construction will continue.
However, he too has accused the Opposition of being against the Government’s crime fighting initiatives.
Minister Alexander also maintained that there is strong public support for the initiative.
Minister Alexander said the Government will continue its crime-fighting efforts to protect the public.
He added that work on posts at Grand Bazaar and Tarouba was progressing without any issues or incidents.
On Monday, the Prime Minister announced plans to establish 30 joint police and army posts across the country, as part of the Government’s crime-fighting strategy.
