While the number of fraud reports has declined so far in 2026, the monetary value of such cases has increased.

Superintendent Arnold Lutchman told today’s TTPS briefing that between January and July 2026, the number of fraud reports had declined by 32.7% to 551, compared to 819 reports in the same period in 2025.

Not all the cases involved TT dollars, however those that did had a value amounting to over 167 million so far for 2026, compared with about 51 million for the same period in 2025.

According to Superintendent Lutchman, the value rose primarily due to the number of fraudulent cheques being made.

Meanwhile, the dollar value for cases involving US currency has fallen: for January to July 2026 it amounted to $524,922, compared to $819,908 for the same period in 2025.

Various cases of fraud were outlined, including the emerging trend of travel fraud, as explained by Superintendent Lutchman.
