Parts of Tobago are currently experiencing a dry spell.
The Met Service says this developed in Hillsborough and Mount St. George over the 3-month period from June to August 2026.
Across southwest Tobago and northeast Trinidad, recent dry spells in June and July eased slightly to Borderline Dry in August.
Rainfall in August 2026 was still below normal at Piarco and across central Tobago, but near normal for the remainder of Trinidad and Crown Point in southwestern Tobago.
Looking ahead, the TTMS says the anticipated level of concern by the end of October (based on a 6-month Standard Precipitation Index) is: Severe Drought Warning at Hillsborough, Mount St. George & central Tobago; Drought Warning at Crown Point & southwest Tobago; and Drought Watch from Valencia in northeastern Trinidad across the Caroni River basin, at Piarco & westwards.
It warns that worsening drought conditions are also possible in some areas by the end of November, while long-term drought is possible across Tobago through December 2026
Conditions are being influenced by a powerful El Niño, which is rapidly strengthening into a very strong event in October/November 2026 and will last into early 2027.
