The judiciary is stepping up efforts to clear a criminal case backlog, with Chief Justice Ronnie Boodoosingh saying some cases have been in the system for decades.
Speaking this morning at the Hall of Justice during the opening of the 2026–2027 Law Term, Justice Boodoosingh said a targeted backlog reduction plan is being used to identify and address the oldest cases.
He also announced that 15 criminal jury High Courtrooms are now functional, almost double the previous amount.
Justice Boodoosingh also emphasized the need for continued recruitment within the Office of the DPP, stronger cooperation among justice-sector partners, and more active case management by the courts.
He said these efforts are essential to reducing delays and ensuring that cases are heard and resolved as efficiently as possible.
