Chief Justice Ronnie Boodoosingh says the Judiciary is intensifying efforts to clear a criminal case backlog, especially those matters which have remained in the system for decades.
Speaking this morning at the Hall of Justice, during the opening of the 2026–2027 Law Term, he said a targeted backlog reduction plan is being used to identify and address the oldest cases.
He also announced that 15 criminal jury High Courtrooms are now functional, almost double the previous amount.
Justice Boodoosingh also emphasized the need for continued efforts to reducing delays and ensuring that cases are heard and resolved as efficiently as possible.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says the reopening of Magistrates’ Courts across the country will help ensure access to justice is not determined by where people live.
In a message marking the opening of the new Law Term, she said Government is also working to modernise the justice system, including digitising laws and addressing court backlogs.
She says Government will continue supporting the Judiciary to improve the delivery of justice to citizens.
