Four secondary school students have been suspended and placed in a youth development programme, following a fight in Sangre Grande on Monday.
According to a Guardian Media report, the boys, believed to be students of Northeastern College, were recorded fighting outside another school on Ojoe Road.
Police said the boys were summoned with their parents and issued seven-day suspension notices.
During that period, they will attend the Sangre Grande Suspension Centre, where they will take part in a programme focused on rehabilitation and conflict resolution.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Dr Michael Dowlath expressed disappointment in the incident and reiterated the Ministry’s zero-tolerance position on school violence.
His comments come after Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar warned students and parents ahead of the new school term that unruly behaviour would not be tolerated.
Dr Dowlath said the matter must be addressed firmly and fairly, while protecting those affected.
He is also urging parents to work closely with school officials, stressing that schools cannot address these issues alone and that firm discipline and support for children must go hand in hand.
