Authorities are investigating the discovery of an abandoned baby girl in South Oropouche.
Around 12:15pm yesterday, a 23-year-old woman was walking along St Mary’s Road, in the vicinity of the South Oropouche Government Primary School, when she observed a cardboard box at the side of the roadway.
She heard the sound of a baby crying and soon discovered a newborn baby girl inside a black plastic bag.
The infant was wrapped in a blanket with the umbilical cord still attached.
The woman took the child and went to the home of a 47-year-old man, who accompanied her the Oropouche Police Station.
The TTPS says the mother of the infant has been identified, however no additional details were given.
Both the TTPS and the Children’s Authority’s Emergency Response Team are investigating the incident.
Anyone with information is being asked to contact either the Authority at 996 or the Police at 999.
Meanwhile, the Authority is urging parents, guardians and caregivers in challenging situations to reach out for support rather than abandon their children.
It says persons who feel unable to safely care for a child should contact the Authority to discuss options for the care of the child.
