Chutney Soca Road March

Renuka Mahabir is the 103.1FM Chutney Soca Road March champion for 2022!
Brought to you by 103.1FM in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture & the Arts, this year’s competition showcased the talents of 12 local artistes: Daddy Chinee, Davin R, Kenneth Salick, Suresh Maraj, Nisha Ramsook, Renuka Mahabir, Shiva Lakhan, Prince Navin Prabhoo, Cherish R, G.Von, Jairam Dindial and 2021 Chutney Soca Road March winner, Amit Sagram.

Submissions were invited and screened using the following guidelines:
• Songs must not contain slander of any kind, e.g. to individuals, entities, brands or otherwise.
• Songs must not contain glorification of regulated or illegal substances, e.g. alcohol, marijuana.
• Songs must not contain lyrics that promote or are based on sensitive or controversial familial affairs such as adultery or domestic violence.
• Songs with double entendre will be subject to individual review.
• While songs may be sampled, full cover versions are not allowed.

Once the contestants were selected, there were several facets of competition, designed to encourage artiste creativity and audience participation. Scores were assigned as follows:
• Live Performance – 50%
• Online Voting on 103fm.tt – 20%
• Official Music Video ‘Likes’ on Facebook & YouTube – 15%
• Collated 103.1FM Announcer Submissions – 15%

The Live Performance show was aired & streamed on February 18th 2022 and judged by a panel consisting of Satnarine Ragoo, Khemraj Sugrimsingh and Nishard M.

As champion, Renuka will be presented with a six-foot trophy, a cash prize of $15,000 and other great prizes from the competition’s sponsors.

Placing second was Amit Sagram and coming in third was Kenneth Salick. Amit will receive a cash prize of $7,000 and Kenneth will receive $3,000 cash.
Presentations to the Winner of the 2022 Chutney Soca Road March, as well as the runners up, will take place on Friday 4th March 2022.

The Chutney Soca Road March competition, which is in its 2nd year, aims to develop and promote local Chutney and Chutney Soca, by encouraging creativity and providing a platform for artistes and their music. Executive Director, Jason Corbie says, “Over the course of our 29 years in broadcasting, 103.1FM has always striven to honour, highlight and develop local East Indian culture. This event has undoubtedly showcased the talent that exists and we vow to continue supporting local artistes and local artforms in the years ahead.”

The Live Performance show was streamed on YouTube, Facebook and 103fm.tt. Official Music Videos and clips of the artistes’ individual live performances were also posted to social media, including Instagram and TikTok. Altogether, these have garnered more than half a million views thus far.

Additionally, as the 2022 Chutney Soca Season ends, 103.1FM has introduced its first ever ‘Fenomenal Award – Trending Chutney Soca Song 2022’. Based on feedback from listeners, as well as Chutney Soca fans locally and abroad, it was 103.1FM’s pleasure to announce this year’s recipient as Kenneth Salick, for his hit song “She Want ah 4×4 Van”. He will be specially honoured by 103.1FM and will receive a cash prize of $2,500.
