Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is calling on citizens to walk away from conflict.
In a post shared online yesterday, she said 2026 has so far seen 40 murders because of altercations, 30 for revenge and 12 due to domestic disputes.
She believes these 82 murders could have been avoided if the ordinary citizens involved had exercised emotional control and physical restraint.
The Prime Minister reinforced this in a follow-up post this morning, saying “Reducing crime is not only the responsibility of our police and security forces. It is the responsibility of every one of us. While gang-related murders continue to decline, too many lives are still being lost because of anger, revenge and domestic disputes. Sometimes the bravest decision is to walk away. A moment of restraint can save a lifetime of regret.”
As for gang-related murders, Mrs Persad-Bissessar believes national security services, under the SOE, have made significant progress.
She says such murders decreased from 273 in 2024 to 122 in 2025 and now stand at 78 for 2026.
These figures show that the against violent criminal gangs.
