A one-off grant of $42,270 has been handed over to the San Fernando Centre for Displaced Persons.
Making the presentation today was Minister of the People, Vandana Mohit, who said working with such NGOs allows the state to expand its reach and ensure support is responsive to the realities and needs of people at the community level.
The money will support the Centre’s Beyond Shelter: A Holistic Reintegration Programme.
Specifically, it is expected to provide structured counselling and psychotherapy, case management and related services for one year, while also supporting the upgrade of existing sleeping facilities through the purchase of bunk beds, mattresses and pillows.
For the past 10 years, the Centre has provided a safe and supportive environment for socially displaced and homeless persons, primarily men requiring accommodation and assistance.
Its clients include elderly persons, persons with disabilities, employed persons and other vulnerable individuals.
The Centre currently operates primarily through community and corporate donations, fundraising, member contributions and volunteer support.
This is the first funding it has received from the Government.
