Guyana has launched a formal investigation into the deadly sinking of the MV Barima, with the swearing-in of a five-member Commission of Inquiry today.
President Dr Irfaan Ali said the independent commission will determine what caused the disaster, whether maritime regulations were followed, and how effectively the search and rescue operation was conducted.
It will also identify any failures and recommend changes aimed at improving the safety of Guyana’s maritime transportation system.
The vessel sank earlier this month while carrying an estimated 179 passengers and crew.
72 bodies have since been recovered, 76 people rescued, and 30 remain missing.
Today as well, Dr Ali formally established the HEART Initiative to provide sustained support to the survivors and bereaved families.
He said the Initiative is intended to help families through the process of healing by bringing together humanitarian assistance, psychosocial and trauma counselling, social services, spiritual guidance and other forms of support for those affected.
