Attorney General John Jeremie says the Special Operations Bill aims to give law enforcement new powers to tackle serious crime and gang activity.
During debate in the Lower House today, the AG spoke about the legal basis for the proposed legislation.
Mr Jeremie also outlined the proposed policing districts.
The AG explained that the legislation would allow these districts to declare closed areas, where police could conduct warrantless searches based on reasonable suspicion.
It also provides for security cordons and curfews within designated closed areas.
Mr Jeremie says the measures are intended to strengthen law enforcement while maintaining accountability through reporting requirements.
