Local Government Minister Khadijah Ameen has rejected accusations that Governmentβs proposed national policy on gated communities was a βpolitical gimmickβ.
The claim came from Diego Martin Central MP Symon de Nobriga, and has been deemed βan insult to citizensβ by Ms Ameen.
In a statement, she accuses the previous administration of ignoring citizens and offering no solutions while crime spiralled out of control.
She says communities across the country have already sought to gate their areas, with the policy meant to give citizens and corporations βlegal clarity and supportβ.
She also denies a claim from the Opposition that gated communities would only benefit the wealthy, insisting that applications have come from farmers, working-class families, and suburban residents alike.
The inter-ministerial committee for the policy includes the Attorney Generalβs Office, the Ministry of Homeland Security, the TTPS, and other technical ministries alongside Local Government Corporations.
