17 persons have received Presidential Pardons.
The Justice Ministry says these were distributed at its Port of Spain Head Office on July 28th.
Justice Minister Devesh Maharaj is the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on the Power of Pardon (Mercy Committee) and presided over the distribution.
He spoke candidly about the long process and backlog involved, and committed to pushing applications forward to ensure the efficient and timely administration of this constitutional function.
He also commended recipients for changing their lives and highlighted the significance of second chances, rehabilitation and restorative justice.
