Russia has reaffirmed its support for Venezuela, while condemning the increased military presence by the US in the Caribbean.

According to Reuters, Foreign Affairs spokesperson Maria Zakharova said it was “excessive military force” in anti-drug operations.

The report also reiterated Russia’s firm backing of President Nicolás Maduro in defending Venezuela’s sovereignty against what was described as US attempts to destabilize the country.

The report quoted the Ministry’s spokesperson as saying “We firmly denounce the use of excessive military force in carrying out actions in anti-drugs operations.”

She also added that Russia “confirms our firm support for the Venezuelan leadership in defending its national sovereignty.”

Ms Zakharova also criticized the US actions as violations of international law, noting that recent operations had resulted in the deaths of 61 people.

This comes as the US continues military activity in the Caribbean.

In May, Russia’s President Vladamir Putin and Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro signed a strategic partnership agreement in Moscow, strengthening ties between the two nations.
