Hurricane Melissa Jamaica

Damages in Jamaica caused by Hurricane Melissa have been initially estimated between US$6 and US$7 billion, or 28-32% of the island’s GDP for last year.

This was announced by Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness during yesterday’s Parliament sitting.

He added that the country can expect up to a 13% in GDP as a result of the devastation, noting that agriculture, tourism, and small businesses were the hardest hit.

In response, the Government has rolled out relief measures, including housing support, mortgage moratoriums, and tax exemptions.
