The Caribbean Court of Justice will this week hear the case of Derek Ramsamooj versus the State of Suriname under its Original Jurisdiction.
Mr Ramsamooj, a Trinidad and Tobago citizen and regional political analyst, is seeking special leave to bring a claim against Suriname, alleging that his rights under the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas were violated.
He claims he was unlawfully detained by police in Suriname between October 2020 and September 2022.
Mr Ramsamooj said was denied legal counsel and medical attention, and coerced into signing documents written in Dutch — a language he does not understand — which were later used in court as a confession.
The hearing takes place on November 6th and 7th at the Caribbean Court of Justice in Port of Spain.
