Former Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Amery Browne says the escalation of tension between the United States and Venezuela can raise anxiety levels in Trinidad and Tobago citizens.

Speaking to the Trinidad Guardian, Dr Browne said Trinidad and Tobago’s foreign policy must be firmly rooted in the United Nations Charter.

He said associating ourselves with extrajudicial killings or military mobilization within the zone of peace, is a cause for concern.

“This entire trajectory of the small Republic of Trinidad and Tobago sharing a border with a large neighbour, which we have managed well over the centuries, we are now at the point of highest tension,” Dr Browne said.

“The Opposition continues to call for the maintenance of peace in this region,” he added.

Dr Browne said with the arrival of the US Navy vessel, the USS Gravely, in Trinidad is a cause for concern.

“In the current circumstances, where there is a massive armada that has been mobilized into our region, this being the large vessel that has come closest to Venezuela, there must be concern,” he said.

Dr Browne also said the Opposition is concerned over the mental health of Trinidad and Tobago citizens.

“Despite the blasé refutations of the Prime Minister, (citizens) are very concerned. Some are quite terrified and it would help if there is some transparency,” he said.

The USS Gravely will remain in Port of Spain until October 30.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the visit would “enhance tactical proficiency and mutual trust.”
