The Energy Chamber says the recent controlled shutdown of Nutrien, T&T’s second-largest ammonia producer, could slash the national output by nearly a third.
In a statement on its website, it added that the closure of Nutrien’s operations would deal a severe blow to the economy, cutting ammonia production by 31%.
As a major global exporter, T&T produced over 4 million metric tons of ammonia last year, with companies like Proman, Nutrien, Yara, and PLNL leading the charge.
While the sector generates billions in exports and tax revenue, it has been struggling due to natural gas shortages and commercial disputes.
However, Nutrien maintains its global supply will not be affected, as its North American plants can cover the shortfall.
