The United States could require up to $15,000 bonds for some tourist and business visas under a pilot programme due to launch in two weeks.

According to a report by Al Jazeera, a notice from the US Department of State said the effort is aimed at deterring those who overstay their visas.

The 12-month pilot programme, which will begin on August 20th and will target those seeking B-1 or B-2 visas from countries with high rates of overstays.

The document however does not identify which nations it will apply to.

According to the report, there were 500,000 suspected overstays in the US in the fiscal year 2023.

The move comes as the US continues to crack down on illegal immigration and those who are in the country illegally.
