UNESCO has officially added Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the announcement on X, calling Diwali “the soul of our civilization”, noting it will further elevate the global popularity of the festival.
Observed by millions worldwide, Diwali or Deepavali is based on the lunar calendar, falls on the new moon in October or November and lasts several days and symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.
UNESCO described the festival as a “vibrant expression of shared heritage, which strengthens social bonds, promotes inclusivity, and encourages values like kindness and hope.”
The festival now joins 15 other Indian traditions, including yoga and the Kumbh Mela pilgrimage, on the prestigious UNESCO list.
