Tropical Storm Melissa has formed in the Caribbean, prompting watches and warnings, particularly in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
According to the National Hurricane Centre in Miami, a Hurricane Watch is in effect for southern Haiti, including the Tiburon Peninsula, while Jamaica is under a Tropical Storm Watch.
Officials have urged residents to complete preparations to protect life and property by Thursday.
While there is still significant uncertainty in Melissa’s path and strength, areas across Hispaniola and Cuba are advised to closely monitor official forecasts.
On Tuesday morning, Melissa was about 305 miles (490 kilometers) south of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (80 kph). It was moving west at 14 mph (22 kph).
