Thousands of people are feared dead after a crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran.
Reuters says it was told by an Iranian security official that the death toll could be around 2,000 people, including security personnel.
Meanwhile, BBC News says one protester, Efran Sultani, will reportedly be “executed tomorrow”, with a human rights group saying they “have never witnessed a case move so quickly”
Demonstrations have been ongoing for weeks – they began on December 28th over another sharp fall in the value of the Iranian currency, and have since spread to other parts of the country with wider calls for political change.
BBC News says while some in Iran are now able to call people outside the country, an ongoing internet blackout is making it difficult to verify information from inside.
In recent days, US President Donald Trump has threatened intervention action.
So far, he has announced a 25% tariff on goods from countries with commercial ties to Iran.
