Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo says the leadership of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is helping to restore international confidence in Trinidad and Tobago, following her recent diplomatic engagement in the United States.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Tancoo said the Prime Minister’s visit signalled a renewed commitment to active international diplomacy and economic engagement.
According to the Finance Minister, direct representation at the highest level helps strengthen investor confidence and ensures the country remains part of key global discussions on trade, energy and investment.
He argued that Trinidad and Tobago is “once again being led with seriousness, purpose and direction,” adding that the government intends to rebuild the country’s credibility and economic momentum through stronger international partnerships.
Tancoo also criticised the previous administration, saying the country experienced a decade of underperformance and missed opportunities.
He referenced public records filed under the United States Foreign Agents Registration Act which showed that a lobbying contract for Trinidad and Tobago in Washington had cost about US$2.4 million beginning in 2016.
Despite that expenditure, he said, the country saw little tangible benefit.
The Finance Minister said the government believes renewed diplomacy and direct leadership by the Prime Minister will help attract investment, strengthen international relationships and place Trinidad and Tobago back on a path of growth and national development.
