Suriname has elected Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, as its first female president, with parliament backing the 71-year-old physician and lawmaker.
Her election came after a coalition deal was struck in the National Assembly, which voted by a two-thirds majority on Sunday.
As the South American nation faces ongoing economic challenges and prepares for future oil revenues, the new President said her immediate focus will be on stabilising state finances.
She and vice president-elect, Gregory Rusland, said they will prioritise better tax collection, especially in the gold-mining sector.
