Tributes to the late Independent Senator Deoroop Teemal kick-started the Senate session today.
Senior Counsel Sophia Chote, a former President of the Law Association, was sworn in as an Independent Senate to replace Mr. Teemal, who passed away in August.
This is Ms. Chote’s second stint on the Independent Bench, having been first appointed in 2015.
Also sworn in as a temporary Independent Senator is veteran journalist Wesley Gibbings. He will for a short time, fill the seat in the absence of senator Dr Desirée Murray who was granted leave to be absent from the sitting.
The Senate today also paid tribute to Dr. Lenny Saith, a former member who passed away on August 25, 2025.
Members then began debate on the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025, which seeks to provide acquisition of citizenship of persons born outside of T&T, if his grandparent is or was a citizen.
