A 60-day state of emergency has been imposed in Ecuador, due to violent protests against the removal of a fuel subsidy.
According to Reuters, clashes erupted in Ecuador’s capital, after the Government’s decision to end a $1.1 billion diesel subsidy, which it said would be redirected to fund to social programs.
The President made the declaration for seven provinces, after protests turned violent, forcing police to throw tear gas and stun grenades control the crowds.
