The scrap iron industry in T&T could come to a halt by Monday if the government does not grant a license extension.
Alan Ferguson, President of the Scrap Iron Dealers Association, said they have not received any communication from authorities about renewing their operating licenses.
He said without this, all scrap yards will be forced to close.
He emphasized the industry’s vital role during the busy Christmas and Diwali seasons, when large amounts of recyclable material are discarded.
Mr Ferguson is urging the government to act, noting the industry employs thousands and contributes to keeping the environment clean.
