Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the death of a four-year-old girl who was taken to the Mount Hope Hospital last night in an unresponsive state.

Police say the child, identified as Jemima Bonaparte, was accompanied by her stepfather to the facility and was pronounced dead shortly after 6 p.m.

According to reports, the child bore no visible marks of violence and is suspected to have swallowed an object, which may have caused asphyxiation and led to her death.

An autopsy is expected to be conducted to confirm the cause of death.

Police officers later went to Sea Lots to interview the stepfather; however, he could not be located.

Investigators were also unable to contact the child’s biological parents.
