Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar met with officials of US Southern Command today, as part of her current visit to Florida.
US Southern Command has been carrying out operations in the region, targeting vessels allegedly linked to narcotics trafficking.
In a statement, the Prime Minister said the meeting was based on an invitation from the US Government and focused on strengthening cooperation to ensure a safer T&T.
She is said to have reinforced support for the continued and expanded partnerships to fight Narco trafficking and called for “further partnerships/technical cooperation on Cyber security, forensics and ballistics”.
Several specific projects were also identified for implementation to support T&T’s security, though additional details were not given.
Mrs Persad-Bissessar has publicly supported stronger US military action against narcotics traffickers in the region, stating that authorities should use decisive force.
